Crystals: What the Bible Says About Them

I love geology! I always thought I'd grow up to be a geologist. I had an extensive rock collection when I was young. Now all grown up and never becoming the geologist I dreamed about, I decided to start a new board on Pinterest about rock formations and minerals. I’ve been fascinated by all the different natural crystals, some that I’d never seen before. And, I noticed something else—using crystals in a religious, talisman, medicinal way. These are just a few of the claims:

Crystals supposedly:
Cleanse
Produce calm
Block stress
Help with meditation (in the Eastern religious sense)
Heal
Guard against "negative energy"
Help with sleep issues
Motivate
Help when grieving the loss of a loved one
Protect
Unblock energy
Produce clarity
“foster unity, peace, and a willingness to work together”**
“bring vibrant beauty, joyful energy”**
“inspire feelings of self-worth and self-love”**

I kept seeing the word Chakra under the crystal pictures. I looked it up. Chakra is a Sanskrit word for wheel or disk. “In yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, this term refers to the wheels of energy throughout the body.” It’s supposed to be where “consciousness and matter meet,” and there are seven basic chakras along the spine to the forehead.* I learned that the idea of crystals having power is connected with the Hindu medicinal practice of Ayurveda.

What does the Bible say about crystals? Do they give off auras and have powers to protect and heal? First, I looked up the word crystals. It doesn’t appear in the Bible. Next, I looked up crystal. These are all the references to crystal in the Bible:
  • Job 28:17—The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
  • Ezekiel 1:22—And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. (In this verse, crystal refers to ice or frost.)
  • Revelation 4:6—And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
  • Revelation 21:11—Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
  • Revelation 22:1—And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Notice how the word crystal is used. In the context of Job 28:17, gold and precious stones are being compared with wisdom--and wisdom is superior to them. In Ezekiel, the word refers to ice, not minerals. And, in Revelation, it’s used as a word of descriptive comparison: like unto crystal, clear as crystal.

Nowhere in Scripture does God say that crystals have any power, give off auras, or help anyone.

It's not a biblical concept.

Crystals are beautiful. They’re part of God’s creation, but biblically, they don’t have any powers. Crystals can’t heal, protect, help you sleep, and they won’t help your body work any better.

Where can you go for this kind of help? Jesus Christ! Read what the Bible says about Him:
  • CleansingChrist also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word (Ephesians 5:25b-26).
  • HealingBut he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
  • RestCome unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).
  • Peace--Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).
  • Sleep issuesI will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8).
  • Help with grievingSurely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4a).
  • ProtectionIn the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge (Proverbs 14:26).
  • JoyThou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore (Psalm 16:11).
Indeed, everything wonderful--the most important being the salvation of our eternal souls--is found in Jesus Christ, who said:

For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.
(John 3:16-17)
